A solo exhibition of artworks by ADAM WEST (Batman from the classic TV Series & movie) to commemorate 40 years since BATMAN exploded on the television scene. This is the first Las Vegas exhibition of its kind by Adam and may be your only chance to purchase an original painting crafted by Batman himself. Adam has used a variety of mediums for his paintings including acrylic on canvas, watercolor on paper and pen & ink. This retro inspired visual treat features original paintings from Chris Reccardi and Lynne Naylor and is sure to please the most discriminating mid-century modern fan as well as everyone else. Vibrant colors, meticulous execution and clever subject matter have caused these two artists to make the seamless transition to the fine art world and develop an instant collector base as well as waiting list for their original works.
Chris and Lynne are icons in the world of cartoon animation having worked on such cartoon classics as Ren & Stimpy, Powerpuff Girls and Samuri Jack (just to mention a few). This artists reception will showcase this husband and wife duos first new complete body of work since their sold out exhibition "GALAXIE" of last year. These paintings may possibly sell out prior to the actual opening of the show. IF you haven't heard of JOE LEDBETTER in the past year or two, then you are either hiding under a rock, not familiar with the L.A. Art Scene or perhaps just need a more formal introduction.

Joe's numberous SOLD OUT shows have people from all over the world scrambling to get the opportunity to own one of his fun, playful and extremely well excuted paintings. SUPERSTITOUS is his most abitious show to date (according to Joe himself) and is inspired by MYTH, LEGEND and FANTASY. JOE's multiple characters have been taking the toy world by storm and, judging from current EBAY prices, selling out much faster than they can be produced. The real treasures though are his much coveted original paintings. We can't guaranty you will be able to obtain a painting from the SUPERSTITIOUS exhibition, however, if you email us fast at nailor@earthlink.net you may be one of the lucky ones to eventually hang one of these on your walls.

We will be also be featuring A STRANGE AND LUSTY HEART, a solo show of tantalizing original pieces by ALEX MEYER that are given no justice in this email (sorry for the poor jpeg quality). To briefly step into the mind of ALEX MEYER all one has to do is read his biography below:

Born in 1974, the conspicuous vitality in cartoons and comic book imagery held an early fascination on the young mind of Alex Meyer. However, it wasn't until much later that he abandoned a practical career course and committed himself to art. Graduating from Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design in Denver with a BFA in Illustration, he has strived to improve as a painter and illustrator.

His paintings have been shown at DC Gallery and Th'Ink Tank of Denver, and he has participated in group shows at La Luz de Jesus and m modern gallery. A mixture of cartoons, pinup, and fantasy art, his work is a product of the rigors of technique haunted by the cravings of the flesh, of proportion in conflict with depravity, of optimism coupled with irony. The aim of this petty psychologist can best be stated in the abstract: to take it to the naked edge - and, of course... beyond!

WHY WALK WHEN YOU CAN FLY - A solo exhibition of works
by JAMES NACCARATO

James Naccarato creates a wonderful world of colorful and playful creatures. Naccarato’s figures often have an inherent fictional quality to them but at the same time these preternatural creatures tend to feel very natural, organic and perhaps even “real.”

Naccarato was born in Kingston, New York, but has lived most of his life in various parts of California where he also studied Fine art and Illustration at the Laguna College of Art and Design. He currently lives in Long Beach with his wife and two children. James has been showing regularly around the country and we are excited about his first ever solo show with m modern.

Drawing inspiration from the world around him, Naccarato uses what he sees to infuse his characters with life. He processes information gathered from daily observations to create his own universe full of twisted and surreal landscapes inhabited with an array of creatures uniquely suited for their particular habitats.

When Naccarato was young he found himself taking a strong interest in 16th and 17th century classical painting, Cubism and Surrealism. Later he started to identify with street art, comics and various underground art movements. This marriage of old and new is apparent in his most recent work that has a very surreal vocabulary and classical technique. Each of his paintings tells a unique story about relationships. Naccarato personifies his creatures with love, loss, solitude, sorrow, ridicule and rebirth. The edges of his images create windows to his worlds, as figures become characters, landscapes become stages and viewers are treated to small (and wonderful) shows set in these tiny “carnivals.”

COHORTS & ACCOMPLICES - A Group Art Exhibition

Many of you witnessed the first wave of this great art genre featuring artists like SHAG, GLENN BARR, MARK RYDEN, TIM BISKUP, ANTHONY AUSGANG, GARY BASEMAN and THE PIZZ. We at m modern are fortunate enough to have shown (and continue to show) these amazing ground breaking talents. As a result, we are often asked about the next wave of emerging artists in this genre. Well, many of them are going to be seen this Saturday at the gallery for the first time with the upcoming exhibition COHORTS & ACCOMPLICES.

This is your chance to witness the future players of this genre and watch them skyrocket like the first wave of artists did. There may never be a better time purchase their art since most of these artists are having a tough time keeping up with current demand and many are busy preparing for solo exhibitions. You’ve all seen what happened with prices for the first wave of artists and don’t be surprised to see rapid price appreciation with this group either. We would never advocate buying artwork for future value, however, we all enjoy the prospect of our artwork portfolio increasing in value (even if we never intend to sell).

About Fractional Tolerance

Fractional Tolerance is an exhibition of new paintings by Eric Joyner at m modern in Palm Springs from May 20th – June 5th. The influence of retro tin robots is evident in viewing the paintings of Eric Joyner at first glance. These images provide a glimpse into how a robot would feel and react placed in different settings that can be both fanastic, familiar or both. While it may be true that robots do not experience emotions, it takes only seconds to sometimes add our own sense of how they would feel if they did. Many of us will smile or laugh when confronted with the imagery provided in these clever and often playful well executed original works.

San Francisco based Eric Joyner has an impressive background in illustration, teaching, exhibiting and an obvious love for his subject matter. The biography section of his web site tells the complete story and is only a few short clicks away (click on the SPIRAL WORLD image below to be transported to Eric Joyner's world).

Eric has shown with us at m modern on several occasions over the past three years and has consistantly sold his works. This new body of paintings should provide his tin robots an opportunity to find great new homes where they can be appreciated for generations to come. Who knows? Maybe ROBBIE THE ROBOT might even make his way to the gallery to see himself on the walls.

About Microcosm
Microcosm is an exhibition of new paintings by Scott Saw at M Modern Gallery in Palm Springs from May 20th – June 10th. The paintings explore space, nature, technology, family life and express the artist’s continual interest with nostalgia.

The show features a new series of paintings that the artist created during the first months of his new son Kai’s life. “With a new baby in the house and working out of my home studio all day and night I have been very isolated – in fact, my wife turned my car into a storage shed for months because it never left the driveway! This solitude amongst my home and family certainly has influenced my recent work. Every painting takes place on an ‘island’ floating in space. I have recently become very interested in physics and understanding cosmology and string theory. Every painting in the Microcosm series contains design elements which are based on some of the simplest vibrational patterns in string theory.”

The paintings are full of iconography relating to space, nature and technology. Rockets take the form of birds and fish, cities grow into tree-like structures and robots have tree trunk torsos. There is also a sense of family life in the new work. In one painting a robot father teaches his son about fishing. In another, a family of robots wave to another family member as he passes by their ultra modern space-home in a fish shaped rocket. There will be 30 new paintings on display as well as a selection of other recent paintings and silk-screen prints.

SYD MEAD "TIMELINE" & "THE FUTURE" CLOSING PARTY

We will be hosting a closing party on SATURDAY, MAY 13th, 2006 from 7:00 - 10:00 pm for the two exhibitions currently on display at the gallery. "TIMELINE" is a solo show of works by SYD MEAD and "THE FUTURE" is a group exhibition featuring many of our favorite artists. See earlier posts for the names of the artists included.

Since the openings were held the evening before EASTER Sunday, we wanted to provide a chance for people to attend a reception for this show. SYD MEAD will unfortunately be away that weekend and unable to attend. Some of the artists from THE FUTURE show will most likely show up and complimentary refreshments will be served during the hours of 7 - 9 pm.

There are still some great pieces available for sale from both shows and we hope you can make it. There will be some print deals as well specifically for that evening too!

The other pieces that are not yet online are the pieces by Glenn Barr, STONE and possibly one or two others. There are alot of sold pieces (sorry, the web site does not yet reflect these), however, there are some great pieces still available if you act fast.

TIMELINE - The SYD MEAD solo show (Syd created the worlds for Bladerunner, 2010, Aliens, Jonny Mnemonic, Timeline and countless other movie and television titles) will go up online in the next couple of days after we have had a chance to take digital photos of it. These paintings are more expensive than the usual offerings at the gallery ($ 10K to $ 35K range), however, they should probably cost a lot more given the level or craftsmanship (not to mention vision and creativity). This is a unique opportunity to own a painting from a master in the science fiction genre. SYD also created countless prototype vehicles for car companies and has an amazing offering of his designs that have been produced by HotWheels over the years. Any graduate of ART CENTER in Pasadena is familiar with his incredible body of work.

m modern plans to transport you in time with two amazing exhibitions that will open on Saturday, April 15th from 7 -10 pm and provide you a glimpse into our artists interpretations of the future.

In our main gallery will be a solo show with futurist icon SYD MEAD entitled TIMELINE. You probably best remember SYD MEAD for the worlds he created in movies such as BLADERUNNER, TRON, 2010, ALIENS, JOHNNY MNEMONIC and countless others. His concept cars, Hotwheels, prototypes, books and other groundbreaking designs are all around us if you look for them. This is the first exhibition of this kind for SYD and he has graciously agreed to offer 9-10 of his original paintings for sale (surely a first)!

SYD will also be hosting a lecture prior to the gallery reception at the beautifully remodeled Hotel Zoso here in Palm Springs. This is no charge for admission or beverages, however, a cash donation to THE PALM SPRINGS PRESERVATION FOUNDATION, the host, is requested but not mandatory. Here are the details:

Hey Everyone,

We apologize for taking what seems like forever to update our Blog. We have an absolutely insane lineup for the remainder of 2006 and have been working feverishly to complete many new projects. Some of which we can share with you now and others that will be announced in due time. All of the news to come is very exciting and we are pleased to be able to offer unsurpassed quality from the gallery for you to enjoy.

Look for us to get more aggressive with advertising this year (full page minimum each month is Juxtapoz) and to possibly launch an entirely new website for the gallery. We love the current one, however, we want to remain on the cutting edge of web technology and make our site as functional and easy to navigate as possible. We have had record turnouts for our opens (as well as record sales) and much is due to the expansion of the gallery to include two exhibition spaces. Shortly we should officially announce our new gallery space that will encompass 4,000 square feet (almost double our current galleries size). This may be the largest gallery space of this kind in our genre.

Here is a brief breakdown of shows that we have scheduled for the rest of 2006:

Greetings & HAPPY NEW YEAR!

m modern heats up January with BLONDE BOMBSHELL, an exhibition of original artwork and photography celebrating platinum icons from Mae West, Harlow, and Veronica Lake to Monroe, Mansfield and Bardot.

Hosted by legendary 50's sex-kitten Mamie Van Doren and David Lachapelle muse Amanda Lepore, the opening reception on Saturday, January 14 is from 7-10 pm.

Artist SHAG (aka Josh Agle) will be signing copies of his new book, Shag: The Art of Josh Agle from 4 to 6pm. This is the most comprehensive book of SHAG's original works yet.

Featured artists and photographers include SHAG, David Lachapelle, Shepard Fairey, Chris Reccardi, Glenn Barr, Ron English, Dave Burke, George Hurrell and Bernard of Hollywood among others.

Go-go dancers in custom Trina Turk costumes will shimmy & shake to the sounds of Super DJ Victor Rodriguez. Many of the artists and surprise legendary
“Blonde Bombshell” guests will also be in attendance. A special THANK YOU to Trina for the amazing designs.

Hi Everyone,

HAPPY HOLIDAYS to all and thank you to everyone that helped make this year so enjoyable from everyone at m modern. 2006 will hold some amazing shows and the gallery will continue to transform itself to provide you with an increasingly dynamic experience.

DAVID WILLS has recently joined us as gallery manager and co-curator. He brings invaluable experience and expertise to the gallery and has been instrumental in helping put together many of our upcoming shows such as the BLONDE BOMBSHELL exhibition to be hosted by MAMIE VAN DOREN and including such amazing artists as David Lachapelle, Shag, Glenn Barr, Ron English, Shepard Fairey, Joe Ledbetter, Niagara, Scott Radke (his doll pictured at top of page) and countless others. We have it by good authority that AMANDA LEPORE, NANCY SINATRA, CAROL BAKER and some other high profile celebrities plan to stop by that evening. Though this evening is really about the artwork with over 55 amazing artists and photographers participating and not who's in the crowd (well, for most of us). This show will have tons of media covering it and should be memorable so be sure to mark off SATURDAY, JANUARY 14th, 2006 on your calendars.

SHAG will also be signing his book SHAG: The Art of Josh Agle at the gallery from 4 - 6 pm before the show starts!

The retro theme is based on the mid-twentieth century fascination with the idea of space travel and idealistic futurism – think rockets, flying cars, the Jetsons and the space age. About Lynne Naylor

Lynne Naylor was born and raised in Vancouver, British Columbia, attended the Sheridan Animation School in Ontario, and began her career in the Animation mecca of Los Angeles.

In the past twenty years, Lynne has worked at nearly every studio in Southern California.She helped create Ren & Stimpy at Spumco, developed features with Brad Bird at ,Turner, worked with Ralph Bakshi on The New Adventures of Mighty Mouse, and designed some very sexy girls in Bruce Timm's Batman. Not to mention her animation on the Rolling Stone's "Harlem Shuffle" video, work on Roger Rabbit and The PowerpuffGirls. In 1997 She produced and directed Universal's direct-to-video Animated Feature "Hercules and Xena: The Battle For Mount Olympus". At Cartoon Network Studios she was a key character designer on the critically acclaimed "Samurai Jack" and the "Star Wars: Clone Wars" micro-series. Lynne is currently at Walt Disney TV Animation, Art Directing on a soon to be announced Animated series.....

In 2000, Lynne began showing work in Burning Brush Art Auctions, where her paintings have been snapped up alarmingly fast. Lynne's work can also be seen in M Modern Gallery, and she is currently painting for a future calendar, and is developing a new line of T-Shirts, now available at her website. Lynne won the very prestigious Reuben Award in 2002, presented by the National Cartoonists Society. In February 2003, Lynne won an Annie Award from ASIFA for her outstanding acheivement in Character Design for T.V Animation.

About Chris Reccardi

Chris Reccardi grew up in the suburban wasteland of Long Island, NY, the youngest of 9 kids. His parents were Catholic.

The principal exports of Long Island are Irish-Italians, drunks, and "art metal" guitarists. And clams.

In 1986 Chris vacated the drunk driving capital of the U.S.A. and headed for California to pursue art, animation, and music. In the last 17 years he has contributed to such award-winning Animated projects as "The Ren & Stimpy Show", "The Powerpuff Girls", "Samurai Jack" and "Shrek 3"(due out in 2006), and has enjoyed the title of Director, Storyboard Artist, Animator, Character Designer and Music composer. He is currently Directing on Disney's "Super Robot Monkey Team Hyper Force Go!", created by the highly talented Ciro Nieli. He is also currently co-producing and directing "The Modifyers", a new animated short for Nickelodeon based on an original series concept. It is due for completion in July 2005.

Chris began showing fine art in the Burning Brush Art Auctions, hosted by the great Tim Biskup . His work has sold consistently to collectors of all tastes and has been featured at La La Land and Gallery 1988 in Hollywood, CA and M Modern Gallery in Palm Springs, CA.

Chris has composed and performed music for "The Ren & Stimpy Show" (including the title themes) and for "IMP, Inc." an original Animated short for Cartoon Network. He's played Bass and Guitar in a variety of local groups in L.A. and is currently completing a self-produced Solo Album due out in 2006....as well as the music score for the aformentioned short "The Modifyers" for Nickelodeon.

In 2002, Chris won a Reuben Award from the National Cartoonists Society for Storyboard on Samurai Jack, and a nomination for a 2005 Annie Award from ASIFA for Character Design.

Chris Reccardi lives in Los Angeles with his wife (and pinup artist extraordinaire) Lynne Naylor.

We apologize for the long delay in between posts. Summer here is our time to shut down, as temperatures reach 100+ daily, and traffic is quite slow until mid-October here in Palm Springs. As a result, we have been scrambling to catch up with emails (read about our email glitch that was only corrected this evening), phone calls and shipping (yikes! still a ton of pieces to send out). We look forward to providing you regular updates throughout the coming months.

We have a great show up currently at the gallery entitled THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT featuring JOE LEDBETTER, KORIN FAUGHT, JASON HOUCHEN and JOHN MONN. There are still many great pieces available (with the exception of the JOE LEDBETTER pieces which SOLD OUT pretty much before the show opened). We are hoping to finally get the show online for viewing and sales early next week. These pieces are extremely well priced and you may end up kicking yourself later if you do not act during this exhibition. Note: Joe is the oldest artist at age 27.

We only realized this evening that the email program we used has been blocking out these entire domains the past several months (if not longer). This means that any incoming messages from you did not ever get to us. Welcome Back!

We apologize for the long delay in posts, however, we were closed for the month of September trying to take some time off and instead dealt with summer colds and kidney stones.

We re-open this month with a great 4 person show entitled:

"THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT?".

NOTE: We will have to try and reschedule with Joe Sorren if he is available in the future and apologize to both him and his many fans as we were unable to get the second gallery together in enough time to co-oridnate the show for October with him. Of course, the second gallery actually was completed yesterday, however, we really were unsure as to whether it would be ready on time and wanted to avoid potential disaster. Again, we do apologize as we were looking forward to the print show as well.

Joe Ledbetter is having difficulty keeping up with current demand for his works (originals, prints &amp;amp;amp; toys) and has had little difficulty in booking solo shows for the coming years. Joe will have two of his prints in limited quantities on hand Friday as well as a few of his custom skateboard decks. Have him personalize one for you at the opening before they are all snapped up.

Korin Faught does intoxicating portraits that are sure to make you ponder the chosen subjects in her works. Korin and her other artist friends Natalia, Alison & Chantal seem to draw a crowd wherever they show their works. Look for Korin and these other talented ladies in future m modern gallery shows.

Jason Houchen & John Monn both work in mixed media and put forth their takes and spins on everyday life with an unforgettable implied commentary. The imagery can be intoxicating, disturbing or both (but never boring). These are two of the nicest kids we have had the pleasure of dealing with in the industry and hope you take the time to talk with them at the opening.

Did we mention not one of these artists is over the age of 25? Talk about being ahead of the curve!

We're Back & The Complete DIONYSUS show is up online!

Hey Everyone,

We apologize for not updating the past couple of weeks. Had a ton of non-gallery related business to attend to. We will attempt to update the Blog much more frequently in the future.

We thought we would mention the entire DIONYSUS show is now up online and some great pieces are still available. Please email or call if you want to purchase a piece as we have been lame in regard to marking pieces as sold online. Emailing us at nailor@earthlink.net is probably the easiest way to find out availability. We do work on a first email or phone call gets the piece basis. So call now to obtain the piece(s) you desire before someone else does.

The DIONYSUS show will be extended through Sunday, August 29th. Pieces already Sold will be shipped off, however, most all other pieces from the show will be available through the gallery. Now if you purchase a piece you can take it home that same evening. May make a trip to the desert worthwhile for that alone. Remember, you can always call my cell at 760.774.8474 if you plan to come down here during a time the gallery is closed. We don't live very far from the gallery and never seem to mind meeting people over there. This is much easier than being open 24/7 we think you would agree.

We will also be including some amazing vintage photos taken of Supermodel VERUSCHKA that are pretty pricey but amazing none the less. These are for the serious photography collector. These are extremely limited and produced by processes that are rarely done today due to cost considerations.

ARTIST SUBMISSIONS

Well,

Last night was eye opening. Could not believe all the great artwork we received from artists we had not previously shown. There are tremendously talented artists out there that take their time to submit packages to us and never hear anything back. We apologize for this as running a gallery is a full time plus job and we never seem to find any additional time to review the submissions you work so hard to put together. Please don't confuse our lack of free time to review submissions with arrogance as we are flattered that you're interested in showing with us and can assure you that all of you have a greater understanding of art than we do. Although we have yet to review the submissions we have received (and there are a ton of them - almost literally), we promise to start immediately by reviewing a few each week. So even if you sent us something back in mid 2003, when we first opened, there is a good chance you will hear back from us (finally) in the next few months.

Today, we opened a package from JASMINE WORTH. Kind of ironic since she is showing with us in the DIONYSUS show and we hung out with her and boyfriend Zack after the opening last night. Her work is great and I wasn't even aware we had a package from her until I browsed through one of the submission bins today. The second package I opened was from KATHIE OLIVAS of Tampa, Florida. Very cool work and we look forward to maybe having her join us in a future group show. Please check out the web sites of these two talented artists by clicking on their names above.

Having said all that, please continue to submit your work (CD's only please) and remember that even if we are unable to show your work it really doesn't mean much. It's most likely that we are already booked for a while, your work may not fit in with our show themes or that you don't have any incriminating photos of us (like other artists we show do). Oh yeah, and it may take a while for us to get back with you.

Lastly, never let ANYONE deter you from pursuing your dreams of being an artist (cause you already are) and especially not galleries. Since galleries are simply retail outlets, we are often driven solely by economics (i.e. the need to eat) and choices are frequently based on making enough money to survive rather than showing everything we like.

NOTE: If you are a new artist wishing to possibly show with us in the future, please check out the ARTIST SUBMISSIONS page under the POLICIES section of our website at www.mmoderngallery.com. This should allow you to send us a package that we will eventually review.

Wow,
We had a great turnout last night at the DIONYSUS exhibition. Had the opportunity to meet Lee (the founder of Dionysus Records)and hang out with him a bit (great guy) and wanted to thank him again for the amazing BOMBORAS album he gave us! You really need to check out the DIONYSUS RECORDS web site at www.dionysusrecords.com to pick up some great music.

A HUGE thank you needs to go out to ANDREW BRANDOU (our guest curator for the show) for all his hardwork, planning, assistance and most importantly friendship from the conception of the show to the drinks and pizza afterward. Andrew is a tremendously talented artist (as if you hadn't already heard of him) and will be showing later this week at COPRO-NASON gallery with our pal MILES THOMPSON. You don't want to miss what should be a great show. It may be worth the trip just to visit the new Copro-Nason gallery space at Bergamont Station in Santa Monica.

We also want to thank all of the artists that travelled in from out of town. We really appreciate you driving in (especially with the insane gas prices these days) and it was a pleasure to meet all of you. We wish we had more time to spend with everyone, however, openings are always crazy and we encourage all of you to simply call us and visit us in town whenever you get a chance (especially when the gallery isn't open). Hope everyone had a safe trip back home and we look forward to hanging out with all of you again!

Lastly, MiShell and I had a lot of fun afterward grabbing a bite to eat with a small group (you guys rock) at MATCHBOX and wanted to thank artists Jasmine Worth, Joe Ledbetter, James Naccarato, Jophen Stein, and Howdy Pardner for all drawing on a menu for us, which we later stole from the restuarant (now that MiShell and I are criminals, maybe we can get some play from Juxtapoz magazine).

"DIONYSUS" Large Group Show coming Saturday, July 9th, 2005, from 8 – 11 pm

"DIONYSUS – Tribute to Dionysus Records"
will be a stellar group art show dedicated to the record label of the same name famous for garage, surf, punk, rockabilly, lounge, exotica, insanity and even a little jazz music. Started in 1984 by legendary DJ LEE (Lee Joseph), Dionysus Records captured our hearts and ears with amazing music and cover artwork by many of our favorite artists today. This exhibit and party is being curated by ANDREW BRANDOU (aka HOWDY PARDNER) and will feature these 40 artists:

Welcome to PSArtBlog! Back in May 2003, my wife and I opened
m modern gallery in Palm Springs, California. We show artists and photographers that we especially find aesthetically pleasing and specialize in mod-pop, fashion, lowbrow, animation and art toys.

Some of the more well known artists we represent from time to time include: Josh (SHAG) Agle, Glenn Barr, Gary Baseman, Tim Biskup, Eric Joyner, Mark Ryden, 60's and current supermodel VERUSCHKA and have even shown art pieces from well know musicians such as David J (Bahaus and Love & rocket's, Debora Iyll (Romeo Void), Rikki Rockett (Poison) & Marilyn Manson.

We find the artworld fascinating and a continued source of learning. It is our hope that this Blog will assist in keeping you up to date with local art openings, gallery events and other discussions pertaining to the art world (especially here in Palm Springs).

In our humble opinion the only reason to collect artwork is because you love it!
